Assistant Quantity Surveyor – Portsmouth, Hampshire (PO6) - Up to £42,000 per annum - 21-Month Fixed-Term Contract
The Opportunity
PW Construction Recruitment is working with an established construction contractor to recruit an Assistant Quantity Surveyor for a major project in Portsmouth.
This is a site-based position offered on an initial 21-month fixed-term contract and represents an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor looking to gain hands-on commercial experience on a substantial live construction project.
Working as part of the project commercial team and reporting into a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will support the effective financial and contractual management of the scheme throughout its delivery.
The role offers considerably more than straightforward commercial administration. You will gain practical exposure across procurement, subcontractor management, valuations, variations, cost control, CVRs and final accounts, while working closely with the operational and project management teams on site.
The Role
You will assist with the day-to-day commercial management of the project, reviewing construction drawings, specifications and project information to undertake measurements, quantities and cost estimates.
You will assist with material take-offs and procurement, obtaining and comparing quotations from suppliers and subcontractors and helping to maintain procurement schedules and trackers throughout the project.
Working alongside the Quantity Surveyor, you will support subcontractor procurement and account management, including preparing commercial comparisons, subcontract orders and associated documentation.
You will review subcontractor applications for payment, assist with valuations and payment notices and undertake the measurement and valuation of completed works on site.
The position will also involve monitoring project expenditure against budgets, identifying and recording variations and additional works and maintaining accurate change and variation registers.
As your experience develops, you will assist with subcontractor final accounts, monthly Cost Value Reconciliation reports, project forecasts and the identification of commercial risks and potential exposure.
You will also gain valuable experience of construction contracts, including JCT, developing your understanding of contractual notices, payment provisions, variations, extensions of time and loss and expense.
Working on site means you will be closely involved with the wider project team, attending meetings and liaising regularly with Quantity Surveyors, Project Managers, subcontractors and operational staff.
The Candidate
Ideally, you will hold an HND or degree in Quantity Surveying or another construction-related discipline, although relevant practical experience will also be taken into consideration.
Applicants should have at least one year's experience working within a construction company, ideally within an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Trainee Quantity Surveyor or similar commercial position.
Previous experience working on a live construction site would be particularly advantageous.
You should have a good understanding of construction drawings, specifications and project documentation, together with some knowledge of procurement, subcontractor management and construction contracts.
Strong numerical ability, attention to detail and good Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, are important.
We are looking for somebody who is organised, commercially minded and keen to develop. You should be comfortable working within a busy project environment, able to manage competing priorities and confident communicating with both commercial and operational colleagues.
A full UK driving licence is required.

My client is offering a salary of up to £42,000 per annum, dependent upon experience, for this 21-month fixed-term contract.
