Lead the Commercial Function of a Growing Civil Engineering Contractor

Are you an experienced Quantity Surveyor looking to step into a senior position where you'll have genuine influence over the commercial success of a thriving business?

Our client is a well-established and expanding civil engineering contractor specialising in surfacing, highways, infrastructure and groundworks projects across London and the South East. Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team based at their Head Office in Medway, Kent.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a commercially minded professional looking to take ownership of a diverse workload, mentor junior team members and play a key role in the continued growth of the business.

The Role

Reporting to the Commercial Director, you'll oversee the commercial management of a high-volume portfolio of surfacing and civil engineering contracts, working collaboratively with the wider commercial and operational teams to ensure projects are delivered profitably and efficiently.

You'll also take an active role in developing junior members of the commercial team, providing guidance, mentoring and technical support.

Working within a fast-paced environment, you'll contribute towards the successful commercial management of up to 150 live contracts each month, ensuring robust cost control, accurate reporting and strong client relationships throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Commercial management of multiple live surfacing and civil engineering contracts.

• Preparation of valuations, cost reports and monthly CVRs.

• Managing subcontract procurement, payments and final accounts.

• Identifying, pricing and negotiating variations.

• Producing accurate forecasts and financial reporting.

• Supporting tender handovers and commercial planning.

• Working closely with Contracts Managers, Estimators and operational teams.

• Building and maintaining strong client and subcontractor relationships.

• Mentoring and developing Assistant and Junior Quantity Surveyors.

• Driving continuous improvements across commercial procedures and processes.

About You

We're looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor who enjoys working within a collaborative environment and is comfortable managing multiple live projects simultaneously.

To be considered, you'll ideally have:

• Previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering, highways, surfacing or groundworks.

• Strong commercial knowledge of NEC and/or JCT forms of contract.

• Excellent cost management, reporting and forecasting skills.

• Experience producing CVRs, valuations and final accounts.

• Previous experience mentoring or supervising junior commercial staff.

• Excellent communication and negotiation skills.

• Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise a busy workload.

• Full UK Driving Licence.
